Dear DGS Families,

With this being a shortened week, I am sending our Principal’s Message early and will return to regular Wednesday updates on November 15, 2023.

We look forward to a week of learning related to Remembrance Day, Indigenous Veterans Day, and for staff, a day of indigenous learning on Thursday named Maatoomsii’Pookaiks (Children First).

Wednesday November 8 marks Indigenous Veteran’s Day and is our last day of classes before Remembrance Day, which is when ceremonies are traditionally held. Remembrance Day is particularly significant for me- I am the daughter and granddaughter of Canadian Armed Forces officers. I spent my early growing up years as what is lovingly referred to as a “military brat,” and spent time living in Churchill Manitoba (CFB Churchill) and in Penhold Alberta (CFB Penhold). My father was a Royal Canadian Signal Corps member, which meant he worked in the somewhat infamous “Diefenbunker.” I am personally grateful for the time he spent as a United Nations Peacekeeper in the 1970s. He taught me many lessons about the strength of empathy, the strength of listening carefully, and the power that comes from protecting the world for those you love. I understand conflict- conflict can be healthy- it creates dialogue, thoughtfulness and can plant seeds change. What I hope for is a world without violence, where nations experience the conditions to truly work with one another. What I hope for are equal human rights, access to agricultural and infrastructure technology, education for all, engineering, availability of medicine, access to diplomatic processes and an end to fighting.

Wednesday’s ceremonies will mark the contributions to peacekeeping efforts made by our Canadian service members, as well as consider the historical significance of symbols such as the poppy. If you do not wish for your child to participate in this ceremony, please let their homeroom teacher know and we will make other arrangements for them during this time.

Lost & Found

Please encourage your child(ren) to check the Lost & Found this week for any forgotten belongings. There is a high number of items that have accumulated there. Any items remaining on November 8 will be donated.

DGS Parent Fundraising Society

We are very excited about our upcoming Casino on December 9 and 10 at the Deerfoot Inn and Casino. We currently require 4 more people to be able to cover our shifts. This is a high value fundraiser that has afforded our students access to additional chrome books, learning commons materials, and fieldtrip busses. Click here to volunteer!!
