Dear DGS Families,

We are back at it! 2024 promises to be an exciting year here at DGS- we are finishing out Wrestling Season and heading straight into Volleyball Season with tryouts underway and interschool regular season play starting shortly. Our coaches are great at updating the website with practice times. Earlier this year, we moved to a model of having announcements for students presented in their homerooms as an internal slide deck for students. All homeroom teachers are expected to share this information with students daily.

We have been given the opportunity to have Jon Nabbs come to the school this Friday (January 12) to speak with our students about his journey running across New Zealand and now Canada, raising money for children fighting cancer. Jon will be inspiring the students to believe in themselves and to not give up, even in the face of adversity. This will be a short 20-minute presentation with an opportunity for the students to ask questions afterwards.

To learn more, please visit Jon’s website here: https://www.jonnabbs.com/

If you are interested in donating, you may do so on his website, alternatively your student can bring a cash donation on Friday.

The Great Outdoors

Winter (our old friend) has arrived. Please remember that all students, whether they ride the bus or live in the walk zone, are expected to spend time outside every day. This means dressing for the weather. Classes such as PE and Outdoor Education continue to be outdoors until the temperatures drop below -21. When temperatures are colder than this, students can still choose to go outside- we provide supervision no matter what the temperature. This is a great time to remind families that the building does not open to the general student population until 8:00am. Students dropped off before that must be prepared to be outside until that time. Students arriving earlier for extra-curriculars are asked to come as close to your practice or rehearsal start time to minimize time spent in the dark/cold.

Student Code of Conduct and Progressive Discipline

A student-friendly copy of our system-wide CBE Conduct is attached to this message, please take a moment to review this with your child. Teachers will be working with the students during class time with this document, along with the Progressive Student Discipline document as a means of reminding students what is expected of them in terms of treatment of each other, themselves and our school, as well as what to expect if you need help remembering how to treat others. While some of the language in the student-friendly code of conduct may seem to be geared to elementary students, it’s really easy to replace some of the terminology with the language of adolescents. While there is not a student-friendly progressive discipline document, teachers will work with students to provide some illustrative examples to support their understanding.

Grade 9 Farewell

Please mark Friday June 7, 2024 on your calendars as the day that we will gather with families to say goodbye to our Grade 9 students. The ceremony is intended for Grade 9 students, their families, siblings and invited guests. The program will begin at 10:00am, with an informal outdoor reception to follow. The Grade 9 Fieldtrip is in its infancy- we anticipate it will take place the week of June 24, 2024.
