Dear DGS Families,
This Fall has been absolutely beautiful- the last one I remember like this was in my second year of Uni- which I have just now realized is 30 years ago… last year, we played soccer in snowstorms, this year, we are looking at 21-degree temperatures to end this week! We have been taking the time with our students to practice seeing things in a number of different ways in our natural spaces around DGS, which has been extra enjoyable because of the warm Autumn we are having. Students have taken the time to learn about carotenoids and anthocyanins, which contribute to the true Fall colours we are seeing this year.
Emergency Preparedness
Did you know that we are required to hold 6 Fire Drills and 2 Practice Lockdowns a year at DGS? Yesterday, we completed our second Fire Drill of the school year. In the weeks to come, teachers will review Lockdown procedures with students in anticipation of completing one of our required Practice Lockdowns in the first week of November. We endeavour to make these experiences as calm and well-organized as possible.
Helping students predict and prepare for unforeseen events is a part of the CBE’s commitment to keeping students safe. I will always communicate with you immediately following practice lockdowns so that we do not create unnecessary stress in the community.
Outdoor Preparedness
As we head toward this change in weather, we just want to highlight a few things:
-
We expect students to be dressed to be outdoors for a period of time every day.
-
The doors to the school open at 8:00am, unless a student has rehearsals or practices that start earlier. We do not let students into the building earlier than 8:00am, regardless of the weather. This means being prepared to be outside until that time whether the temperature is -20 or it is raining.
Lost and Never Found?
Our Lost and Found Collection has begun to grow. Water bottles? Yep, we’ve got them. Expensive hoodies? They’re lovely. Single shoes? We don’t know how, but yes, those too! If your child is missing items, we ask that they have a look in our lost and found. We are not able to take classes to the Lost and Found, as it takes away from learning time. The Lost and Found is emptied and items sent for donation at the following points in the School Year:
Fall Break (Nov 8)
Winter Break (Dec 22)
Teacher’s Convention (Feb 14)
Spring Break (Mar 21)
May Long Weekend (May 16)
Year’s End (Jun 27)
You are welcome to come in and have a peek if there are specific items you are looking for.
DGS Parent Fundraising Society
We are very excited about our upcoming Casino on December 9 and 10 at the Deerfoot Inn and Casino. We currently require 14 more people to be able to cover our shifts. This is a high value fundraiser that has afforded our students access to additional chrome books, learning commons materials, and fieldtrip busses. Click here to volunteer!!
Demographic Verification Forms
These forms are legally required to be completed EVERY school year. If for some reason you are unable to complete this form, please contact the Office to make arrangements for assistance in completing this. We thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. Click HERE to sign-in.
Student Health Updates
It is important for the school to have the most up-to-date information regarding any of our students with medical conditions, taking medications, allergies, etc. This is not just for students that are new to Dr. George Stanley or to the CBE; these are for all students with medical conditions to complete EVERY school year.
Please review the attachments, if this is applicable to your student, please complete the forms and return them to the school, via email drgeorgestanley@cbe.ab.ca or dropped off at the main office. Thank you for helping us keep the students safe and healthy.

Grade 6 Students and Noon Hour Supervision
All Grade 6 students who stay at DGS for lunch MUST be registered for noon supervision. We have two fabulous lunchroom supervisors who work with students daily. Students who go home every day at lunch must check out and sign back in. Grade 6 is the last year families pay the noon supervision fee. We provide additional supervision for ALL DGS students so they can enjoy a safe lunch break. Noon Supervision (and registration) information can be found here.
