Dear DGS Families,

We are excited about the upcoming band concert on Thursday, January 22. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their musical skills and celebrate the learning, practice, and perseverance that have gone into their work. It’s always impressive to see how far they’ve come—our students are really striking the right note as they bring their learning to life on stage!

We were pleased to welcome representatives from David Thompson School, who presented to our Grade 6 students about their Grade 7 Late French Immersion program this afternoon. Students were engaged and asked thoughtful questions about the opportunities the program offers. We will be forwarding additional information about this program shortly; in the meantime, we encourage families of Grade 6 students to talk together about the presentation and reflect on any questions that may have come up. More information will be shared soon.

We also want to remind families that report cards will be finalized and available for viewing online beginning February 24. In the weeks leading up to that date, we encourage families to regularly review current grades and assignment completion in PowerSchool with their child. Staying informed throughout the term allows students to address missing or incomplete work and seek support early. If you have questions or concerns while reviewing PowerSchool, please connect with your child’s teachers. Strong communication between home and school is key to supporting student success.

Our volleyball season is now underway, and we would like to wish all of our teams the very best this season. We are proud of the commitment, teamwork, and sportsmanship our student-athletes demonstrate, and we appreciate the support from families and staff as they represent our school.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our school community.

Warm regards,

Chris Keuben
Principal | Dr. George Stanley School

Closed Campus Reminder – Lunch Hours

We would like to remind families that Dr. George Stanley School follows a closed campus policy during lunch, meaning students are expected to remain on school property for the duration of the school day.

We respectfully ask that parents and guardians do not write notes or provide permission for students to leave campus to visit local restaurants or businesses during lunch.

We appreciate your understanding and partnership in reinforcing this policy.

Opportunity for Gr. 9 Girls and Gender-Diverse Youth – She Governs

She Governs is an annual program introducing young women and gender-diverse persons to Calgary’s municipal government, from council meetings to the path to becoming a council member. This initiative aims to foster leadership in young women and gender-diverse youth in our community, connecting students with like-minded peers engaged in civic matters and interested in local issues affecting Calgarians.

This year’s event will take place at City Hall on March 13, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Through a Model Council meeting and Speakers' Panel, selected participants will gain firsthand insights into government and hear from experts across local politics and public service.

Please note: Selected participants must also complete 4 hours of mandatory capacity-building and training between March 6–13, scheduled outside regular school hours.

How You Can Help

Your support in spreading the word about this opportunity is crucial to reaching young women and gender-diverse youth who could benefit from participating in She Governs 2026. By sharing this with your students, you can help us reach those young leaders.

Attendance Area Update for the 2026–2027 School Year

As we begin planning for the 2026–2027 school year, we are preparing for the student lottery process, which will take place on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. Available spaces are determined on a grade-by-grade basis, making accurate enrolment information especially important.

To support this planning, we are asking only families who know that their child will not be returning to Dr. George Stanley School for the 2026–2027 school year to complete a brief survey (to be shared shortly).

Knowing in advance if students will be leaving helps us:

  • Accurately determine the number of spaces that may become available in each grade, and
  • Ensure the lottery process is carried out as fairly and transparently as possible.

If your child will be returning to Dr. George Stanley School next year, no action is required.

Thank you for your support and cooperation as we plan for the upcoming school year. If you have questions about enrolment planning or the lottery process, please contact the school office.

Tallyn’s Birthday Skate – Supporting Alberta Children’s Hospital

You are invited to Tallyn’s Birthday Skate on Saturday, January 31 from 3:00–5:00 p.m. at Cardel Rec Centre, Arena 4 (333 Shawville Blvd SE). This annual community skate celebrates Tallyn’s birthday while raising funds for the Alberta Children’s Hospital Neurosurgery Unit.

Admission is by donation, with coffee, hot chocolate, and cookies included. What began as a three-year-old’s generous gesture has grown into a beloved Calgary tradition, bringing the community together—often with special guests like Calgary Hitmen players—to support pediatric neurological care. Lace up your skates and help make a difference!

Winter Clothing Drive

Our Grade 7 Leadership Team is collecting gently used winter outerwear to support children and youth in need. Donations will be accepted until Friday, January 23.

We are gratefully accepting:

  • Jackets and coats
  • Snow pants
  • Scarves
  • Mittens and gloves
  • Winter boots

Items should be in good condition and are needed for babies, toddlers, children, and teens.

Please drop off donations in the decorated “Winter Clothing” box located in the main foyer by the office.

Thank you for your generosity and support!

Reminder| Fees

This is a friendly reminder to please review and pay your student’s school fees as soon as possible. These fees are essential for supporting a strong complementary class program, providing unique and engaging field trip opportunities, and sustaining our exceptional interscholastic sports teams. You can view and pay fees, register for services like transportation and lunch supervision, and print receipts all through your MyCBE account. If you need assistance accessing your account or paying online, please contact the school office or visit the CBE Fees & Waivers page for more details.

The Calgary Board of Education strives to ensure that no child is ever denied access to education because of an inability to pay fees. Families who need financial support may be eligible for a Central Fee Waiver, which can cover central fees such as transportation, lunch supervision, student supplies, and instrument rental if approved. Waiver applications are submitted online through your MyCBE account and require supporting documentation; please apply early as processing can take several weeks. For full information on the waiver process, eligibility, and deadlines, visit the CBE Fees & Waivers website.
