Dear DGS Families,
It’s HERE! Spring is here!
I want to extend an enormous “thank-you” to all of our Humanities teachers for the outstanding work they did with their students to create a meaningful showcase of student work related to our SDP Literacy Outcomes. Their planning and preparation was reflected in the high quality, thoughtful work that was displayed for students and parents on Friday afternoon. The team received so many compliments from parents around the creative, intentional way our students are being taught to use academic vocabulary. I was able to immerse myself in what was presented, and I was totally lost in seeing the world through our students’ eyes and I was able to capture really powerful images to share with our Director related to this work. When we come together, the work is truly outstanding.
Last Friday morning, our school was impacted by a local Enmax power outage. Typically, when these incidents occur, I send a message home that day. This time, I was remiss in doing so, and I apologize. Our teachers were able to continue working with our students to keep their learning moving ahead, and when areas of the building warmed up, we were happy to take students outside to see the sunshine. Thankfully, the power came back on just in time for our Grade 7 and 9 teachers and students to participate in a much anticipated “Twinning is Winning- Dress Like Each Other” Fashion Show. This Friday, our Grade 6 and 8 homerooms will select one person to represent each of their teachers for another brilliant face-off. This is all in support of our CREW time that takes every opportunity to bring together students across Grades, create a culture of care, and be a part of the enthusiasm and action.
We also hosted our inaugural Middle School Jazz night last Tuesday and it was outstanding! It was amazing to watch three great music professionals come together and create an evening all of the student musicians should be incredibly proud of. I want to thank our own Ms. Emily Thomas, Ms. Carla Smith from Samuel W Shaw School and Ms. Ilana Manning from Dr. Martha Cohen School for their collaboration, encouragement, and enthusiasm for bringing Jazz into their students’ lives!
And finally, wherever your May Long Weekend takes you, I wish you peace, relaxation, and safety. We will see your children on May 21!
