Dear DGS Families,
If you blinked and missed the last week and a bit, welcome to Week 3 of Back-to-School fabulousness. This week brings our first official interschool athletics events of the year, School Pictures, a visit from our Director, Ann Ard, and a couple of 30-degree days of temperatures.
Dogs of DGS Calendar
DGS Parent Fundraising Society, In Conjunction with DGS Photography and Digital Literacy Classes present our First Ever “Dogs of DGS” Calendar. Families can participate in one (or all) of three ways:
- Send in a great photo of your family’s pet dog (or cat, or ocelot, Bearded Dragon maybe? Hedgehog? Goldfish are welcome, too!) repping DGS- you can dress them in red, white or black, or give them a Canadian Flag, a “DGS” sign- be creative! Image requirements will be sent home next week.
OR
- Book a “photoshoot” appointment to take place in the evenings between October 8, 9 and 10, 2024. Student photographers will produce at least 10 high quality images of your pet. You’ll be able to choose which image is included in the calendar and access to your digital files from the shoot is included in the $10 fee. Props and costume items (scarves, t-shirts, backdrops, etc.) will be available for inclusion in the shoot. In keeping with AR6004, no rats, poisonous or venomous or indigenous wild animals are able to participate in the photoshoot event.
- Purchase your 2025 “Dogs of DGS” Calendar, where your pet will be included as a part of the photo layouts. Makes a great gift, as well!
This CTF Project combines authentic work from a number of different fields of employment students take up in their Career and Technology Foundations Classes- we look forward to combining design studies, marketing, photography and logistics to create a product that represents their learning and raises funds for further educational enhancement activities here at DGS.
Watch SchoolMessenger and our DGS Instagram for more details on how you can participate!
Emergency Preparedness at DGS
Tomorrow, at 11am, our school will practice its first fire drill of the school year. If there are additional considerations around sensory issues or safety issues to be considered for your child, please reach out to their homeroom teacher so that we can plan and manage the situation accordingly for them. As with most fire drills, I will send a brief follow up message once the drill is complete. Next week, teachers will be supporting students with understanding some revised directions from CPS related to how and where to situate students in classrooms during lockdown drills. We take a commonsense approach to emergency preparedness and safety for all.
Terry Fox Run and Donations
The students of DGS will be participating in the Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 20. We have a school goal of raising $2500 and appreciate any and all donations! Students can bring in their funds to their homeroom teacher or donations can be made online: https://schools.terryfox.ca/72950
We will have a friendly competition between classes and some exciting incentives for reaching our school goal…stay tuned!
Meet the Teacher Night
Please join us in the Backyard on Thursday September 19 for an informal opportunity to meet your child(ren)’s teachers. Food trucks will be on-site with food for purchase and teachers will be available in the backyard between 6pm and 8pm. Staff have planned some casual outdoor activities for families and students, and our Leadership Students will be conducting tours of the school. We look forward to connecting with you!
Online Forms
School Engage digital forms regarding Demographics Verification and Annual Media Authorizations are now available for all families to complete. We know the system can be a bit temperamental and it may take a few tries to be able to successfully complete the form- please take the time to complete these important steps so that our office staff are able to finish their work with your forms.
Grade 5 and 6 Students and Lunch Hour Supervision
All Grade 5 and 6 students who stay at DGS for lunch MUST be registered for noon supervision. We have two fabulous lunchroom supervisors and three EAs who work with students daily at lunchtime. Students who go home every day at lunch must check out and sign back in. Grade 6 is the last year families pay the noon supervision fee. We provide additional supervision for ALL DGS students so they can enjoy a safe lunch break. Noon Supervision (and registration) information can be found here: CBE | Lunch Supervision
