Wednesday Principal Update - November 15, 2023
Dear DGS Families,
Welcome back from Fall Break- we look forward to three days of learning, and then a return to our regular routines.
A week ago, we were so honoured to gather together and commemorate Remembrance Day. We want to thank Retired Major Linda Wright, Retired Lieutenant Colonel Rick Wright, and MP Tom Kmiec for sharing their wise words and their time with us. Our students did a brilliant job speaking and representing our school community.
Last Thursday, our staff spent a day together with the work of Maatoomsii’Pookaiks- putting children FIRST. We spent a lot of time talking about what lives in our hearts- culture, values, language, family, community, school, belonging and finding harmony with ourselves, others, and the world around us. Watching a former student speak on the high school student youth panel was so powerful- our youth are our greatest gift- we owe it to them to listen. We want to thank Kokum’s Bannock Kitchen as well- if you have not had the experience, we highly recommend it!
We head into Basketball Semi-Finals next week- this is a good time to remind students that they are welcome to attend the first game that we host on November 21- it may or may not be DGS’s teams playing. We will not be able to admit students to later games, unless they attend with an adult who stays with them for the duration of the evening. This rule is consistent across all of our Division 7 Schools- should we play in other playoff games, spectators would need an adult to stay with them in order to attend, regardless of where the games are held. We want to thank all of our student for having been GREAT spectators this season- you are true sports FANS!
Upcoming Parent Teacher Student Conferences
Time has been set aside on the evening of Thursday November 23 and all day on Friday November 24 for Parent Teacher Student Conferences. A small group of teaching teams will be holding their conferences on the evening of Wednesday Nov 22 instead of on Thursday- if this is the case, it will pop up when you use Conference Manager. Please note that you MUST have your CBE account set up in order to book conferences- no bookings can be made through the main office at this time. All conferences will be held virtually this year- feedback from parents last year indicated that this allowed parents to book multiple conferences for multiple children, while minimizing disruption to evenings and work schedules. We have some families who have a student in each of our designated elementary, middle and high schools, and this model serves to maximize access for families. It also allows for more flexibility for our many families who also work in schools. We want you to know you are always welcome to start a conversation with your child’s teacher, whether it is October 1, November 20 or any other day of the year. Any time is the right time for a conversation with your child’s teacher about their progress, growth and achievement- simply reach out to your child’s teachers to arrange a conversation outside of Nov 23 and 24.
DGS Parent Fundraising Society
We are very excited about our upcoming Casino on December 9 and 10 at the Deerfoot Inn and Casino. We currently require 4 more people to be able to cover our shifts. This is a high value fundraiser that has afforded our students access to additional chrome books, learning commons materials, and fieldtrip busses. Click here to volunteer!!
Course Fees and Lunch Supervision Registration
We have received notice that the courses that have fees associated with them have been added to your account; fees are due when assigned. Also please note: all grade 6 students that stay at school for lunch should be registered to do so.
Fees and registration can be found on your MyCBE account.
