Dear DGS Families
I am Chris Aylesworth, the new acting principal for Dr. George Stanley School. I enjoyed a warm welcome and am learning the lay of the land. It is a great school with wonderful people!
Ms. Malette started her new position with the Alberta Teachers’ Association and is enjoying the new opportunities it provides. Last Friday, the staff had a farewell for Chantal and she was deeply touched. The kind words, stories and camaraderie blended together for a memorable evening. I know she will deeply miss the DGS school community and it will always hold a special place in her heart. The DGS principal position will be posted on Dec. 16 and interviews will be held Jan. 3 or 10. The new principal will start on either Jan. 27 or Feb. 3. My role is to maintain current processes and attend to day-to-day operations in concert with Mr. Rushton and the DGS staff.
Since I will be at DGS for the next several months, I will share a little about myself. I started teaching many years ago at Chief Justice Milvain School in Whitehorn and worked in a variety of K-12 schools for the next 37 years. In 2019, I retired from Jennie Elliott School in Lakeview and joined the admin. sub roster. During my school travels in acting roles, I invariably meet colleagues I used to work with and now kids are coming up to me saying that I taught their parents Yep, time flies. I did spend time as Acting Principal at Cranston School over the last several years and recognize many students at DGS from my time there. My wife Sue is a retired CBE administrator, my daughter Sarah teaches at McKenzie Highlands School and my youngest daughter Katherine has a media job in Toronto.
Grade 7 students have been participating in a Natural Resources Symposium with Inside Education this week. Inside Education has been bringing a wealth of expertise to support students in experiencing: engaging, hands-on, and authentic learning experiences. They have had the opportunity to work through ideas related to Citizen Science as well as going to a local farm. Students are creating 42 second videos which will highlight an issue connected to the themes of: agriculture, water, wildlife, energy, air or climate. The Symposium will culminate with students sharing their videos with experts and presenting selected videos during a closing ceremony.
