Dear DGS Families
Last Thursday, we hosted our first “Code Red” basketball event. All four of our teams played a game series against Louis Riel School, and DGS rolled out the red carpet for families and fans of both teams. Congratulations to our junior basketball teams for their fantastic victories that night—your hard work and teamwork truly shone! And a huge round of applause for our senior teams as well; while the scoreboard didn't reflect a win, your skill, determination, and sportsmanship were nothing short of inspiring. Go 67s!
I want to thank Grade 7 Leadership for organizing “Anything But a Backpack” Day. We had everything from toasters, buckets, a printer, a microwave, an assortment of carry-on bags, and a garden cart to a stroller, golf bags and our WINNING backpack- a Grade 11 sister who was contracted to carry items around until she had to go for her first class. We loved how creative people were, and we really enjoyed the opportunity to giggle as a learning community.
Last week, I also shared that I am leaving DGS and the CBE on November 8. Our school community is very important to me, and I have begun the important work of sharing our existing processes, structures, levels of support, organization for teaching and learning, middle years philosophy and priorities for the 2024-2025 school year with Mr. Chris Aylesworth, who has been appointed Acting Principal for Dr. George Stanley School until at least the end of January 2025, when a new Principal will be named for our school. Your input is valued by the CBE. To have your voice heard about what you are looking for in a new principal, please complete the survey located here:
Dr. George Stanley Principal Survey
The survey will be available until 10:00 PM, Nov 8, 2024 and is open to all students, current staff members and DGS families.
Winter is Coming… and So are the Busses
Did you know that by the end of the 2024-2025 school year, we anticipate having upwards of 10 school busses attached to DGS? We know that when the weather gets colder, snowier and less fun, it’s super tempting to stop in the Bus Zone to drop your child off or pick your child up. Please don’t give in to the temptation. Staying OUT of the bus zone improves safety for everyone. That tired looking lady in the orange safety hoodie who frowns and points when people stop in the bus zone? I promise she’s actually really nice! Wave and say “Hi!” as you pass by- parents are welcome to stop in the drop zone along Cranston Drive- we are all responsible for traffic safety around our school. We appreciate it when people obey traffic control devices in the community and cross the street at the cross walks ONLY.
