Dear Families,
We are excited to welcome you this evening for our Meet the Teacher event. The weather looks great, and we are looking forward to connecting with you and helping you get to know the staff who have been working with your children this year.
This coming Monday, September 22, marks the fall equinox, or the beginning of fall, when the hours of daylight and darkness are equal. Many of Canada’s Indigenous communities will pause at this time to give thanks for the fall harvest, for the longer hours of sunlight that the summer season has provided, and to mark the passing of the sun’s annual cycle into its next phase. In many Indigenous traditions, the fall represents maturity and wisdom, and the equinox is a moment to celebrate our connection with the Earth. The North American celebration of Thanksgiving is deeply rooted in these Indigenous teachings and is just one way that Indigenous history and culture continue to enrich our shared society.
The fall equinox is also recognized in many other cultures around the world. In China and across East Asia, families celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, gathering to give thanks for the harvest and to admire the full moon. In Jewish tradition, the equinox often coincides with Sukkot, a harvest festival where families build temporary shelters and share meals in gratitude. In South Asia, harvest celebrations such as Pongal and Onam also honour abundance and the cycles of nature. These traditions, like those of Indigenous peoples here, remind us of the importance of gratitude, balance, and respect for the natural world.
In recognition of the equinox, we encourage you to find time with your family to connect with Mother Earth, or Na’a in Blackfoot, and in your own way, give thanks.
Looking ahead, next week we will take time as a school to reflect, learn, and remember during Truth and Reconciliation Week, which will include Orange Shirt Day on October 1. We will be sharing more details soon about how our students and staff will engage in meaningful learning during this important week.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend and a smooth start to the fall season,
Respectfully,
Chris Keuben
Principal
