Dear DGS families,

We are approaching the final full week of classes for the 2025-2026 school year!

We would like to wish our Grade 6 and Grade 9 students the very best as they continue writing their Provincial Achievement Tests. These assessments are an opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and growth, and we are proud of the effort and perseverance they have shown throughout the year.  There will also be opportunities for students to take a break from testing and enjoy some well-deserved fun. Our Grade 6 students will be heading to The Beach YYC, while our Grade 9 students will be enjoying a day at Calaway Park. We hope these experiences provide students with a chance to relax, connect with friends, and celebrate the accomplishments of the school year.

Next week students will be cleaning out their lockers next week. To help make this process easier, we encourage families to remind their children to begin bringing personal items home throughout the week rather than waiting until the final day. This will help avoid students having to carry large quantities of belongings home all at once. We also ask families to take a moment to check at home for any school resources that may have been borrowed throughout the year, including library books, textbooks, classroom novels, or other school materials. Returning these items before the end of the year helps ensure that resources are available for students next year.

Our lost and found continues to contain a surprising number of items. Students have been reminded by their teachers to check for missing belongings, but a reminder from home can also be helpful. Parents and guardians are welcome to stop by the school to look through the lost and found as well. We would love to reunite as many items as possible with their owners before summer break.

This weekend, many will be observing the summer solstice, which occurs on June 21 and marks the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The Summer Solstice is recognized in many cultures around the world as a time to celebrate the power of the sun, the abundance of the growing season, and our connection to the natural world. While traditions vary from place to place, common themes emerge across continents and generations: gratitude for the gifts of the Earth, appreciation for community and family, reflection on the cycles of life, and hope for the season ahead.

These themes are also reflected in Indigenous cultures across North America, including the Blackfoot. For the Blackfoot, the Summer Solstice is a time of gathering, renewal, gratitude, and connection to the land. It serves as an opportunity to honour relationships with one another, with nature, and with the Creator. As we approach the longest day of the year, the Summer Solstice reminds us of values shared by people around the world—gratitude, community, reflection, and respect for the natural world that sustains us.

Congratulations to our Senior Flag Football team on an outstanding performance at the Wilma Hansen Invitational Tournament! Through teamwork, determination, and excellent sportsmanship, the team competed at a high level and earned the tournament championship.

We wish all of our students, families, and staff a lovely weekend ahead. Happy Father’s Day on Sunday to all who are celebrating, and we hope you are able to enjoy some meaningful time with your loved ones. We look forward to another amazing week ahead as we continue to finish the school year strong.

Traffic Safety Reminder

As we head into another busy week, please take a moment to remind your child about safe street-crossing habits. Even when using a marked pedestrian crosswalk, students should always stop, look left, look right, and look left again before crossing. Drivers may not always see pedestrians right away, so staying alert and making eye contact with drivers whenever possible helps keep everyone safe.

There have been some recent near misses at our four-way stops near the school, and as such, are asking families to review traffic laws associated with these intersections. You can read more using this link. Also, we want to emphasize that entering the intersection before the preceding vehicle clears it is unsafe and illegal in Alberta.

Why You Must Wait

  • Intersection Clearance: Alberta law requires the intersection to be completely clear of both vehicles and pedestrians before the next vehicle enters.
  • Hidden Pedestrians: The vehicle ahead of you can block your view of pedestrians crossing in front of it.
  • Sudden Stops: If the leading vehicle stops unexpectedly, you risk trapping yourself in the intersection or causing a collision.

Thanks so much for your help in keeping everyone safe.

Alberta Class Size Reduction Grant

We are pleased to inform you that our school has been allocated 2 additional teaching positions for the 2026–2027 school year through the Government of Alberta’s Class Size Reduction Grant.

This grant funds teaching positions that support improved learning conditions in kindergarten to Grade 9 classrooms.

This funding is specifically intended to help reduce class sizes in core subject areas (English Language Arts/French Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies), with priority given to schools experiencing the greatest class size pressures.

This decision was made using system-wide data that considers:

  • The number of classes exceeding provincial class size benchmarks
  • Projected enrolment and class organization
  • School programming and grade configuration

Our goal is to ensure students benefit from:

  • Increased teacher attention
  • Improved classroom learning environments
  • Greater support for diverse learning needs

We remain committed to supporting strong learning environments for all students and using our resources thoughtfully and strategically.

Provincial Achievement Test (PAT) VOLUNTEERS needed

Grade 6 & 9 students will be writing their Provincial Achievement Tests in May and June. DGS School will require 6 parent volunteer (with a valid Police Clearance) to help with each exam. These parents will help monitor students and help ensure exams run smoothly for all students. Please review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up.

Apply Now for Yellow School Bus Service for 2026-2027

Families are now able to apply for yellow school bus service for the 2026-27 school year. Registration is available through your MyCBE account. (If you do not already have an account, learn how.

We continue to accept registrations after the deadline; however, students are added to the closest existing bus stop with available space. Processing times for registrations submitted after the June 14 deadline will be delayed. It may take until mid-October before your child is able to ride the bus.

Tuck Shop Closes June 23

A reminder to families that the Tuck Shop's final day of operation for the school year will be June 23. This will also be the last day that hot water will be available for student use. Please plan student lunches accordingly for the remaining days of the school year, particularly if your child typically relies on hot water to prepare their lunch. This is also the last day of Healthy Hunger deliveries.

Art and Drama Department Donation Request

The Art/Drama department is looking for a few key donations to help us out for next school year. For art we are hoping to secure some magazines that you are finished reading, any scrapbooking materials you are done with but are still useable, skeins of yarn/wool and/or embroidery thread. In drama we would like to build a more robust puppet collection and costume collection (size 10+ and/or accessories). If you happen to have these things about your house and were just wondering what you might do with them, we will gratefully take them off your hands. Thanks in advance for your support!

Parent Contributions to Year-End Staff Appreciation Potluck

As the school year comes to a close, the DGS Parent Council is planning a special Year-End Staff Appreciation Potluck Lunch to thank our incredible school staff for their hard work, dedication, and support throughout the year.

  • 📅 Date: Friday, JUNE 19
  • 📍 Location: DGS School

We would love the support of our school community to help make this lunch a success! If you are able, please consider signing up to bring an item for the potluck. Contributions of salads, main dishes, side dishes, desserts, beverages, or serving supplies are all greatly appreciated.

This is a wonderful opportunity to show our teachers and support staff how much we appreciate everything they do for our students each and every day.

DGS Casino Fundraiser – Volunteers Needed

DGS School is looking for 40 volunteers to help run our upcoming 2-day Casino Fundraiser on:

  • Tuesday, November 17 & Wednesday, November 18, 2026

This Casino is our school’s largest fundraising opportunity and only comes around once every two years. Over the course of just two days, we have the potential to raise more than $80,000 to support our students and school programs.

Every volunteer shift makes a huge difference — for every 8-hour shift filled, our school earns approximately $2,000. No other fundraiser comes close to this level of impact.

Unfortunately, if we are unable to fill all volunteer positions, we risk losing this recurring opportunity and could be removed from the Casino rotation list for close to a decade.

The earlier you sign up, the more flexibility you will have in choosing shifts that work best for your schedule. Both day and night shifts are available.

  • Casino Location
  • Pure Casino Calgary
    1420 Meridian Road NE, Calgary
  • Volunteer Sign-Up

Please review the available positions and sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C044FACAE2CA6FCC16-64221488-dgscasino#/

Thank you for supporting DGS School and helping make this important fundraiser a success!
