Dear DGS Families,

The tragic events at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia have shocked and saddened all of us. We send our thoughts and condolences to the school, the community and all those impacted by this event. Schools are part of the broader community, and we recognize the deep impact this tragedy has had. As educators, we share in the community’s sorrow and extend our sympathy and support to all those affected.

An event such as this may affect individuals in different ways, and it is important to seek support when needed. We encourage students to speak with their family members about their feelings and to lean on trusted supports as they process the news about this incident.

With schools closed for Teachers’ Convention and the Family Day long weekend, there are a number of local community and mental health support services available in Calgary. The following resources may be helpful:

  • Kids Help Phone – Call 1-800-668-6868 or text CONNECT to 686868
  • Calgary Distress Centre – 403-266-HELP
  • Suicide Crisis Help Line – 9-8-8
  • 2-1-1 – Alberta Help Line
  • 8-1-1 – Alberta Health Services Health Link

As we move into next week, there are also important occasions in our community that we would like to acknowledge.

Beginning on the evening of Friday, February 27, 2026, many Muslim students and families will observe the start of Ramadan, a sacred month in the Islamic calendar. Ramadan is a time of prayer, reflection, generosity, and fasting from dawn to sunset. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is observed as a way to deepen spiritual awareness, practice gratitude, and strengthen community connections. Ramadan concludes with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, expected to begin on the evening of Sunday, March 29, 2026, and continue into Monday, March 30, 2026.

We also recognize Lunar New Year on February 17, 2026, a significant cultural celebration observed by many communities across Canada and around the world. Within our schools, we are fortunate to reflect a rich diversity of languages, traditions, and lived experiences. Often referred to as the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year, Tết by Vietnamese communities, or Seollal by Korean communities, this celebration holds deep cultural and historical meaning. It is one of the most widely recognized and joyfully celebrated events globally. We welcome the Year of the Horse through meaningful student, family, and community connections and conversations.

Finally, a reminder that Monday, February 16, 2026, is Family Day, and there will be no classes. We hope this long weekend provides an opportunity for rest and quality time with loved ones.

During times of both sorrow and celebration, we are reminded of the strength and care within our school community. We wish all of our families peace, connection, and comfort in the days ahead.

Warm regards,

Chris Keuben
