Dear DGS Families,
We are looking forward to our Winter Concert tonight, which begins at 6:30 PM. Thank you to all families for purchasing tickets, supporting our music program, and—most importantly—supporting your children. We also want to wish Ms. Cutshaw the very best on her first school concert as our band teacher here at DGS. We are excited to celebrate the hard work of our students and staff this evening.
Looking ahead, volleyball games return to DGS starting next week. We are excited to welcome visiting teams and spectators back into our gym. As a reminder, families are asked to review and follow our spectator policy, which is included below as an information item, to help ensure a safe and respectful environment for all.
Semester 2 begins on January 28. For students in Grades 7–9, this means they will be changing their complementary classes. Homeroom teachers will ensure that all students are aware of their new schedules. Students in Grades 5 and 6 will continue with their current schedules and will keep rotating through the complementary wheel, allowing them to experience each of the complementary classes we offer.
As a reminder, report cards will be available to families beginning February 24 through the MyCBE. School conferences are scheduled for February 26 and 27, with more detailed information to be shared soon. Please note that conferences are taking place earlier than in past years. This adjustment was made in recognition of Eid al-Fitr, which is observed on March 19 and 20, as part of our commitment to being an inclusive community school and ensuring that conference dates allow for participation by all families.
Please be sure to check all the upcoming dates at the end of this message.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support and partnership.
Warm regards,
Chris Keuben

Health and Life Skills - Opt-In Forms
A reminder to all families that opt-in consent forms for the Human Sexuality component of the Health and Life Skills curriculum were recently sent home. Alberta Education requires written parent/guardian consent for students to participate in this portion of the course. We kindly ask that all forms be completed, signed, and returned to your child’s homeroom teacher no later than February 11, even if you are choosing partial participation or non-participation. Thank you for your attention to this important requirement and for helping us ensure timely planning for instruction and supervision.
Dr. George Stanley School Athletics Spectator Policy
DGS shares a common spectator policy with all schools within our middle school athletics (CMLSAA) division.
Dr. George Stanley School will be maintaining these spectator expectations and conditional attendance policies for spectators to support a positive and safe environment for our student athletes.
DGS Students:
- DGS students will be able to view the first home game (4:30 PM start) without parent/guardian supervision.
- Once the first game is complete, school administration will assist in ensuring all DGS students without a parent/guardian leave the building.
- DGS students will need to be directly supervised by a parent/guardian if they would like to stay and/or return at any point after the first game is complete. Parents / guardians cannot assume responsibility for large groups of students.
- While in attendance, DGS students are expected to be in the gym watching the game(s) and supporting all players/coaches/referees/parents/guardians in a positive manner. Any student who is not meeting the CBE Student Code of Conduct will be escorted out of the gym and school and may lose future viewing privileges.
Parents / Guardians:
- All parents/guardians are welcome to attend all games at Dr. George Stanley School.
- Parents/guardians who bring family members under the age of 18 are expected to supervise their child(ren) in the main gym.
- All parents/guardians are expected to cheer/support all players / coaches / referees / parents / guardians in a positive manner.
- If parents/guardians are engaging in any inappropriate behaviour directed towards players/coaches/referees/parents/guardians, the game will be paused and the parent/guardian will be asked to stop. If the inappropriate behaviour continues, the game will be stopped again and will not re-start until the parent/guardian leaves the gym and school property. If removed, the parent/guardian may lose future viewing privileges at Dr. George Stanley School.
- Our main goal is to provide a safe and fun opportunity for students.
Please remember:
- The players are kids.
- The coaches are volunteers.
- The referees are human.
- There will be no scholarships or professional contracts handed out
Students from other schools (non-players):
- Students from other schools who are not accompanied by a parent/guardian are not permitted at the visiting school - no exceptions.
Closed Campus Reminder – Lunch Hours
We would like to remind families that Dr. George Stanley School follows a closed campus policy during lunch, meaning students are expected to remain on school property for the duration of the school day.
We respectfully ask that parents and guardians do not write notes or provide permission for students to leave campus to visit local restaurants or businesses during lunch.
We appreciate your understanding and partnership in reinforcing this policy.
Opportunity for Gr. 9 Girls and Gender-Diverse Youth – She Governs
She Governs is an annual program introducing young women and gender-diverse persons to Calgary’s municipal government, from council meetings to the path to becoming a council member. This initiative aims to foster leadership in young women and gender-diverse youth in our community, connecting students with like-minded peers engaged in civic matters and interested in local issues affecting Calgarians.
This year’s event will take place at City Hall on March 13, 2026, from 8 AM to 2:30 PM
Through a Model Council meeting and Speakers' Panel, selected participants will gain firsthand insights into government and hear from experts across local politics and public service.
Please note: Selected participants must also complete 4 hours of mandatory capacity-building and training between March 6–13, scheduled outside regular school hours.

Attendance Area Update for the 2026–2027 School Year
As we begin planning for the 2026–2027 school year, we are preparing for the student lottery process, which will take place on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. Available spaces are determined on a grade-by-grade basis, making accurate enrolment information especially important.
To support this planning, we are asking only families who know that their child will not be returning to Dr. George Stanley School for the 2026–2027 school year to complete a brief survey (to be shared shortly).
Knowing in advance if students will be leaving helps us:
- Accurately determine the number of spaces that may become available in each grade, and
- Ensure the lottery process is carried out as fairly and transparently as possible.
If your child will be returning to Dr. George Stanley School next year, no action is required.
Thank you for your support and cooperation as we plan for the upcoming school year. If you have questions about enrolment planning or the lottery process, please contact the school office.

Reminder | Fees
Please review and pay your student’s school fees. These fees are essential for supporting a strong complementary class program, providing unique and engaging field trip opportunities, and sustaining our exceptional interscholastic sports teams. You can view and pay fees, register for services like transportation and lunch supervision, and print receipts all through your MyCBE account. If you need assistance accessing your account or paying online, please contact the school office or visit the CBE Fees & Waivers page for more details.
Families who need financial support may be eligible for a Central Fee Waiver, which can cover central fees such as transportation, lunch supervision, student supplies, and instrument rental if approved. Waiver applications are submitted online through your MyCBE account and require supporting documentation; please apply early as processing can take several weeks. For full information on the waiver process, eligibility, and deadlines, visit the CBE Fees & Waivers website.
Tallyn’s Birthday Skate – Supporting Alberta Children’s Hospital
You are invited to Tallyn’s Birthday Skate on Saturday, January 31 from 3:00–5:00 PM. at Cardel Rec Centre, Arena 4 (333 Shawville Blvd SE). This annual community skate celebrates Tallyn’s birthday while raising funds for the Alberta Children’s Hospital Neurosurgery Unit.
Admission is by donation, with coffee, hot chocolate, and cookies included. What began as a three-year-old’s generous gesture has grown into a beloved Calgary tradition, bringing the community together—often with special guests like Calgary Hitmen players—to support pediatric neurological care. Lace up your skates and help make a difference!
