Dear DGS Families

This Friday, Canada marks National Indigenous People’s Day. As a part of our system-wide work, we want to share our 2024-2025 Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation. This commitment is directly linked with our school’s established Wellness Goal. 

63.3:  We commit to learning about and through Indigenous knowledges focused on building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect. 

We will do this good work by working through the Holistic Lifelong Learning Framework to: 

Heart - To Belong: Develop and apply staff knowledge of strength-based, holistic, restorative practices that foster inclusion for Indigenous students, staff, and families. 

and 

Heart - To Belong: Improve or create structures and processes that facilitate positive conflict resolution for students (e.g., restorative circle discussions, inclusion of Elder), and provide clear, welcoming, and transparent communication processes with Indigenous families.  

This commitment will form the basis of the work we take up regarding increasing student safety and sense of belonging. We look forward to sharing more about this in the Fall of 2024. 

We also want to take this opportunity to congratulate Ms. Katherine Cardwell, who has been appointed to a position at Ernest Morrow School, and Ms. Anne Binks, who will be on a yearlong adventure away from the CBE. We want to thank these two outstanding educators for their valued and expert contributions to DGS over the last 8 years. Next week’s message will contain further staffing updates at DGS for the 2024-2025 school year, as well as start-up information for families who will be returning.
