Dear DGS families,

Tomorrow, our school community will come together for the annual Terry Fox Run. This event is an opportunity for students and staff to honour Terry’s legacy of courage, perseverance, and hope, while raising awareness and support for cancer research. We encourage students to wear comfortable clothing and footwear for the run, and to bring a water bottle.

On Wednesday, October 1, Dr. George Stanley School will recognize Orange Shirt Day. We invite all students and staff to wear orange as a visible show of support and remembrance. This day is connected to Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (observed on the non-instructional day of September 30), which honours the children who never returned home, Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family, and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters.” The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom, and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations. Throughout this week, students will have had opportunities to share, discuss, and reflect in some of their classes as a further act of reconciliation.

We also want to take a moment to recognize the incredible work of our teachers. Over the past month, they have been focused on building a strong sense of community, establishing positive relationships, and getting to know each student, not only as a learner but also as an individual with unique social and emotional needs. Our teachers are passionate about supporting students and families, and they work hard to create meaningful learning experiences, and foster a safe and welcoming environment. In addition to their classroom work, many teachers are also volunteering their time to sponsor lunchtime clubs, lead intramurals, provide extra help at lunch, and coach teams which currently includes cross country, basketball, and soccer. Their dedication is at the heart of the success and well-being of our school community.

We wish all our families a wonderful weekend. As we reflect on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we hope you have an opportunity to connect with nature, spend meaningful time with loved ones, or participate in one of the many events happening in our community to honour this important day.
