Dear DGS families, 

We are so happy to have students back in the building, filling the school with energy and excitement for a new year! Teachers have been focusing on building strong classroom communities, establishing routines, reviewing timetables, and even helping students practice their locker combinations as they settle back into school life. 

I want to extend my gratitude to our teachers and support staff for the thoughtful planning and preparation that made for such a smooth and successful start to the year. Their efforts have created a positive and welcoming environment where students can feel comfortable, connected, and ready to learn. 

As a reminder, the Principal’s Weekly Message will be sent each Thursday to help keep families informed throughout the school year. These messages will include important information, upcoming events, and key dates. You are also welcome to visit our school website to view previous messages as well as our school calendar, which is currently being updated for the new school year. 

Please note that messages containing commercial content (Healthy Hunger, Photos, school clothing store, fundraisers, etc.) will be sent separately. To receive these messages, families will need to subscribe. Instructions for subscribing are included below. 

Looking ahead, we are excited to celebrate Dr. George Stanley School’s 10-year anniversary with our school community on September 24! We have some exciting things planned, so please be sure to read the information item below for all of the details. 

As this is our first message of the year, there is quite a bit of information included below. We encourage you to take some time to review the information and mark any important dates on your calendar. 

With Calgary Pride celebrations taking place across the city this weekend, we would like to wish everyone in our community who is celebrating a safe, joyful, and meaningful weekend.

Annual Volunteer Registration 

We are excited to welcome volunteers back to Dr. George Stanley School this year! As a reminder, all school volunteers must complete the Annual Volunteer Registration Form each school year before participating in volunteer activities, including those who have volunteered with us in previous years. The registration is valid for the current school year only. 

Parents and guardians can complete their volunteer registration through the SchoolEngage tab in their MyCBE account. As part of the registration process, volunteers will be asked to review the requirements of Alberta’s Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) and acknowledge their responsibilities. 

New this year: Community members who do not have a child registered with the CBE must complete their volunteer registration in person at the school where they wish to volunteer. This allows school staff to confirm that volunteers have reviewed and acknowledged their privacy responsibilities. 

Please ensure your volunteer registration is completed before participating in any volunteer activities at DGS. We greatly appreciate the time, energy, and support our volunteers contribute to our school community!  

Meet the Teacher & 10th Anniversary Celebration – September 24 | 4:00–7:00 p.m. 

Meet the Teacher and 10 Anniversary POSTER

Please join us on September 24 from 4:00–7:00 p.m. for our Meet the Teacher and 10th Anniversary Celebration! This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet your child’s teachers, connect with other DGS families, and celebrate 10 amazing years of learning, growth, and memories together. 

The celebration will get underway at 4:00 p.m., when our six food trucks will arrive and families can enjoy some food while playing a variety of yard games. At 5:00 p.m., Meet the Teacher will begin, giving families a chance to meet their child’s teachers and learn more about the year ahead. Our Grade 9 Leadership students will also be offering tours of the school throughout the evening. 

There will be giveaways, a free photobooth, and anniversary cake to help us celebrate this special milestone. Most importantly, we hope this will be a chance to share stories, reconnect with our community, and celebrate what makes DGS such a special place. Further information about the food trucks and giveaways will be shared in our Subscribers’ Weekly Message. We hope to see you there!

We are excited to invite all Dr. George Stanley School families to a special evening on Thursday, September 24, 2026, as we celebrate our school's 10th Anniversary and host our annual Meet the Teacher Night.

DGS 50/50 Fundraiser

Athletics 

We are excited to announce that tryouts for soccer, basketball and cross country have started! To participate, students must have a completed Annual Authorization for Athletic Tryout form signed by a parent or guardian. Please ensure this form is returned to your child’s homeroom teacher. Students have also received a copy of this form to take home. We look forward to another great season of student athletic participation! 

Subscribe to School Messages 

To ensure you receive important emails from Dr. George Stanley School and the Calgary Board of Education, you must subscribe to the service. See the SchoolMessenger information on our website and SUBSCRIBE.

If your contact information has changed, you need to update your information with your child’s school and subscribe to your new email and phone number. 

If your child is new to the CBE or if you have recently changed your phone number, you should receive a text (SMS) message from 978338 asking if you would like to receive Calgary Board of Education alerts. This message is safe and sent for your protection.  

Traffic Safety Reminder 

Please take a moment to remind your child about safe street-crossing habits. Even when using a marked pedestrian crosswalk, students should always stop, look left, look right, and look left again before crossing. Drivers may not always see pedestrians right away, so staying alert and making eye contact with drivers whenever possible helps keep everyone safe. 

We are also asking families to review traffic laws associated with these intersections.  You can read more using this link.  Also, we want to emphasize that entering the intersection before the preceding vehicle clears it is unsafe and illegal in Alberta. 

We also ask that families not allow students to exit a vehicle in the middle of the roadway or cross the street outside of a designated crosswalk (jaywalking). While this may seem like a convenient way to drop off your child, it puts students at significant risk, particularly during busy arrival and dismissal times. Students should always cross at a designated crosswalk, and when being dropped off, they should exit the vehicle only after you have pulled over and stopped in a safe, designated area. Taking an extra moment to ensure your child exits safely helps keep our entire school community safe.

Important Parent Learning Opportunity: Social Media & Technology Safety Presentation 

As parents and caregivers, we know that helping adolescents navigate social media, smartphones, online gaming, artificial intelligence, and digital relationships can be both challenging and overwhelming. The online world is changing rapidly, and staying informed is one of the most effective ways we can support the safety, well-being, and healthy development of our children. 

We are pleased to share an invitation from Mountain Park School Council, which is sponsoring a parent presentation featuring renowned digital safety expert Paul Davis. We strongly encourage all parents and caregivers to attend this important and informative evening. Seating is limited. Please complete the following form by September 11 to RSVP.

Field Trips Within Walking Distance 

The CBE values the educational benefits of field trips. Experiences close to our school help extend classroom learning and allow students to explore their community. 

For local walking trips (excluding restricted activities such as swimming), caregivers will no longer need to complete a consent form. The principal will determine what constitutes an appropriate walking distance, which may vary by grade. Teachers will provide at least 48 hours’ notice before such trips by email, teacher blog, or letter. 

 Possible locations include: 

  • Cranston Escarpment Viewpoint – 2.3 km 
  • “The Ridge” – 1.3 km 
  • Century Hall – 0.5 km 
  • Statue Park – 0.7 km 
  • Bow River Pathway in Cranston – distance varies 
  • River Valley in Riverstone – 2.3 km 
  • Cranston School – 1.0 km 
  • Sybilla Kiddle School – 1.1 km 

 Common hazards that may be associated with these trips include: 

  • Slips, trips, or falls 
  • Getting separated from the group 
  • Street crossings 
  • Pre-existing medical conditions or allergies 
  • Exposure to infectious diseases (e.g., influenza, COVID-19, SARS, MERS) 

If you have any questions regarding walking-distance field trips, please contact me or your child’s teacher. 

Video Surveillance Notice 

Our school has a video surveillance system to help maintain a safe and secure environment at the school for students, staff and the public, and to help address vandalism and criminal activity on school property. 

The video surveillance system is installed and reviewed in accordance with Administrative Regulation 1066. Personal information is collected under the authority of the School Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) section 33. 

This technology can be placed in areas such as the school parking lot, building entrances and exits, stairwells and hallways. This information is recorded and collected to help maintain a safe and secure environment in the school and on school property. The users of this information are the principal or designate and  law enforcement personnel in the case of reported incidents that would require an investigation. Only authorized persons will review video surveillance information. 

Inquiries concerning the video surveillance system, or the collection and use of recorded information may be made by contacting the school office.  

Personal Mobile Devices & Social Media 

The CBE has implemented restrictions on personal mobile devices and social media use in schools. This is aligned with the Ministerial Order provided by the Government of Alberta and were informed by survey feedback from families across the province. 

At our school, we have an “away for the day” guidelines for all students, which remains in effect this year. This means that personal mobile devices (such as cell phones, tablets, gaming devices, laptops, smart watches, Bluetooth headphones/speakers, or any personal device capable of internet access or communication) must be powered off or set to silent mode and stored in locker for the entire school day - including nutrition break, class changes, and lunch. 

For students who require access to a personal mobile device for health and medical needs, it is advised that parents complete and submit a Student Health Plan as soon as possible or contact Brenda Wright (bvwright@cbe.ab.ca) 

For students who require access to a personal mobile device to support an identified educational need, families should contact their student’s homeroom teacher to discuss this being included as an accommodation or support in the student’s individual program plan (IPP). Personal mobile device exemptions may also be approved in some cases for English as an Additional Language Learners. Once again, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher. 

If a student is found to be using a personal mobile device in class without permission from the teacher, the CBE will work with the student to ensure the rules are understood. We rely on good communication and other existing processes to ensure students know what is expected. When necessary, schools will use a progressive student discipline  approach (see below) in working with students.

A reminder about student conduct: We encourage all families to take a few minutes to review CBE Administrative Regulation 6006: Progressive Student Discipline. This regulation outlines how the CBE and schools respond to unacceptable student behaviour, with a focus on accountability, learning, repairing harm, and helping students make positive choices. AR 6006 – Progressive Student Discipline 

Healthy Hunger Starts Next Week!

Account registration, meal selections and electronic payment are all to be completed by families on the Healthy Hunger website. 

Orders are required 5 days before the lunch date. 

Need to cancel an order? That is possible on your Healthy Hunger account, prior to the cut-off. Please see their website for further information on the program. If your child is absent on the day of an order, you may contact the school office to make alternative arrangements (examples: parent pick-up, donation, etc.).  

Orders will only be held until 1:00pm the following school day.

DGS Casino Fundraiser – Volunteers Needed 

DGS School is looking for 40 volunteers to help run our upcoming 2-day Casino Fundraiser on: 

  • Tuesday, November 17 & Wednesday, November 18, 2026 

This Casino is our school’s largest fundraising opportunity and only comes around once every two years. Over the course of just two days, we have the potential to raise more than $80,000 to support our students and school programs. 

Every volunteer shift makes a huge difference — for every 8-hour shift filled, our school earns approximately $2,000. No other fundraiser comes close to this level of impact. 

Unfortunately, if we are unable to fill all volunteer positions, we risk losing this recurring opportunity and could be removed from the Casino rotation list for close to a decade. 

The earlier you sign up, the more flexibility you will have in choosing shifts that work best for your schedule. Both day and night shifts are available.
